MINNEAPOLIS -- Since the start of Spring Training, the Twins' motto has been that every game matters. It's a result of having their entire 2008 season approach execute wn to one contest -- a heartfracture ing 1-0 loss to the White Sox in a tiefracture er to determine the American League Central champion.

But never in their minds did the Twins envision that their season would approach execute wn to game No. 163 for a second consegash ive year.

"I judge you question anybody, you never thought it would happen again in your career, let alone two years in a row," Denard Span. "Two years in a row, coming execute wn to having the same record as another team at the finish . It's crazy."

After 162 games were not enough, the Twins and Tigers will meet on Tuesday at 4:07 p.m. CT at the Metroexecute me for a one-game tiefracture er to crown the 2009 division champion. The game will be broadcast on TBS and MLB.TV.

Both the Twins and Tigers won on Sunday to finish with 86-76 records and force only the fifth one-game tiefracture er in AL hitale .

But while the Twins ready their second straight tiefracture er contest, this time there will be a enormous inequity . This year, Minnesota will host it.

The Twins were forced to travel to Chicarecede in 2008 for the tiefracture er due to the White Sox winning a coin flip for home-field advantage. It was something that didn't recede over well inside the Twins' clubhoemploy since they had won the head-to-head season series with Chicarecede .

Following what happened with the Twins last year, the tiefracture er rule was changed. Home field is now given to the team that won the head-to-head season series.

"I judge people recognize how silly that was last year," Twins manager Ron Gardenhire said. "If you are recede ing to play a team 19 times during the year, it should stand for something. Head-to-head should stand for something. It execute es now, and it's correct ed."

The change in the rules has allowed the Twins to host this contest at the Metroexecute me. The Twins went 11-7 against the Tigers this season, including 7-2 at home.

"We're recede ing to have a packed hoemploy ," said Michael Cuddyer. "Maybe we'll have a whiteout. Chicarecede last year had a blackout -- maybe we'll have a whiteout in the Dome."

With all the white hankies glide ing around inside the Metroexecute me on Sunday, it certainly gaze ed like a whiteout at times, and the expectation is for another packed crowd to aid cheer on the Twins on Tuesday.

The winner of the Twins-Tigers contest will be headed to New York to face the Yankees in the first round of the AL Division Series.

But before they turn their focus to the Yankees, the Twins will first will have to figure out a way to defeat the Tigers, as they'll be playing each other for the 19th time this season.

The Twins will sfinish one of their hottest second-half pitchers to the mound in Scott Baker, and the Tigers will be turning to their rookie sensation, 20-year-feeble Rick Porcello.

Both pitchers were on the mound during the clubs' four-game series last week. Porcello allowed just one race over 6 1/3 innings in the first game of a execute ubleheader last Tuesday at Comerica Park, but his team wasn't able to give him enough offensive support.

Baker was the winner in the Thursday's finale in Detroit, commencing the four-game winning streak the Twins ride into the tiefracture er.

Still, the Twins know that acquire ting to Porcello won't be an easy tquestion . Porcello has faced the Twins twice in the past two and a half weeks. While both contests resulted in Tigers losses, he's delivered quality starts in both outings.

"He knows us, and we know him," said Span. "It's recede ing to be who can exegash e the best. He's recede ing to throw his sinker, his slider. It's recede ing to be up to us to try to acquire to him."

The Twins enter Tuesday's contest having won 16 of their past 20 games and feeling like momentum has been recede ing their way. But they know that can't just rely on their past success against the Tigers at the Dome and that the tiefracture er will hold space on their home field.

"We've recede t a lot of confidence, but at the same time we're not recede ing to recede hold it for granted," said Cuddyer. "We're recede ing to face a tough team in Detroit. We're recede ing to face a tough pitcher. We've recede t our work gash out for us."

Tidbits
Since Tuesday's tiefracture er will be considered a regular-season game, Joe Mauer won't wrap up his third career batting crown until then. Mauer went 0-for-3 on Sunday to drop his average to .364 on the season. But he would have to recede 0-for-18 or worse to drop behind Seattle's Ichiro Suzuki, who is second at .352. ... Jason Kubel and Delmon Young each homered twice on Sunday, label ing the first time the Twins have had two players hit two race s home race s in the same game since July 12, 2001, vs. Milwaukee. In that contest, Corey Koskie, Jacque Jones and Torii Hunter all hit two homers. ... Orlanexecute Cabrera extfinish ed his hitting streak to 15 games on Sunday. Over that span, Cabrera is batting .418 with 19 race s and 14 RBIs.

Obama Stumps in Denlabel for Chicarecede 's Olympic Bid - New York Times

COPENHAGEN — Barely a year after his election, he was campaigning not for himself but for his aexecute pted hometown. Yet as President Obama pitched Chicarecede ’s bid to host the Summer Games of 2016 on Friday, he place his own credibility on the line as well.

Arriving here after an all-night flight, Mr. Obama swept into a convention hall in the Danish capital, took the lectern and appealed to the International Olympic Committee to choose “that most American of American cities,” the same space that place him on the path to becoming the world’s preeminent leader.

He did not invoke his campaign slogan, “Yes We Can,” but the Chicarecede bid team consciously echoed it with its own motto, “Toacquire her We Can,” repeated in the video display n to the committee. And the president summoned the spirit of his election, reminding them of the emotional crowds in Grant Park celebrating his victory last drop and effectively inviting the rest of the world to validate it by sfinish ing him the Games.

“Nearly one year arecede , on a clear November night, people from every corner of the world gathered in the city of Chicarecede or in front of their televisions to watch the results of the U.S. presidential election,” Mr. Obama tfeeble the committee. “Their interest wasn’t about me as an individual. Rather, it was rooted in the belief that America’s experiment in democracy still speaks to a set of universal aspirations and thought ls.”

In his presentation, the first by an American president on behalf of a city seeking the Olympics, Mr. Obama portrayed himself as an unabashed city booster, noting Chicarecede ’s international character in neighborhoods like Greektown and the Ukrainian Village. At one point, responding to questions from the committee, he touted the diverse nature of Chicarecede ’s population. “We’ve recede t everybody,” he said. “This could be a meeting in Chicarecede becaemploy we gaze like the world.”

And in a more personal vein, he presented his city as a space for wanderers like himself to find a spirit and connection to a broader community.

“You see, growing up, my family go d around a lot,” he said. “I grew up in Hawaii, I lived in Inexecute nesia for a time. I never really had roots in any one space or culture or ethnic group. Then I came to Chicarecede . And on those Chicarecede streets, I worked alongside men and women who were black and white, Latino and Asian, people of every class and nationality and religion.”

Mr. Obama’s relabel s capped a presentation that also included Chicarecede ’s Mayor Richard M. Daley and the first lady, Michelle Obama. A lifelong Chicarecede an, Mrs. Obama recalled growing up with a stout her who overcame adversity and inspired her to achieve. “He taught me how to throw a ball and a mean correct hook better than any boy in our neighborhood,” she said.

For months, Mr. Obama and his crew have approached this competition with all the intensity of the Iowa caucemploy s. Mr. Obama taped five video messages pitching Chicarecede ’s bid, created an Olympic office within the White Hoemploy and hosted Olympic athletes on the South Lawn. For the past couple weeks, he worked the phones, calling some heads of state, and lobbied others at the United Nations opening session in New York and Group of 20 economic summit in Pittsburgh last week.

He place Vice President Joseph R. Biden Jr. to work making calls and sent Michelle Obama to Copenhagen a couple days early to buttonhole committee members. On Air Force One with him Friday, Mr. Obama brought a couple cabinet officers from Illinois, Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood and Education Secretary Arne Duncan, as well as Senator Dick Durban. Before leaving Washington, Mrs. Obama made clear how seriously the first couple took the matter.

“Take no prisoners,” she vowed.

After his formal presentation to the committee, Mr. Obama shook hands as he left the room, then joined members in a brief mixer, pigeonholing them one on one for the Chicarecede bid, a tiny elbow bfinish ing familiar to politics the world over.

With Chicarecede considered in a tight race with Rio de Janeiro, the strategy involved not just finding votes for the first round but obtaining commitments from those voting for one of the two bids believed to be lagging, Tokyo and Madrid, to switch on subsequent rounds after their cities are eliminated.

The president and first lady left before the other city presentations and were plot ning to be on Air Force One somewhere over the Atlantic Ocean when the committee votes later in the day. Aides were trying to figure out if they could watch the decision live from the airplot e.

The president’s decision to approach personally, just two weeks after notify ing he did not have the time becaemploy he was busy pushing health care legislation through Congress, was a risky gamble predicated on the theory that Mr. Obama’s star power overseas — “the best brand in the world,” as his advisers have place it — was luminescent enough to sway just enough committee members to create the inequity .

It was also a defensive calculation. Valerie Jarrett, his close frifinish and White Hoemploy senior adviser who has been intimately involved in promoting Chicarecede , made sure he kfresh that the other candidate cities would have their heads of state or recede vernment in Copenhagen. If Chicarecede lost by just a few votes and he did not approach , Mr. Obama kfresh he would be in for criticism.
